Settlement

Definition

Settlement is the point at which a payment is final and the value is available to the recipient.

Settlement is the moment value becomes final and usable by the recipient. In traditional cross-border payments, settlement can take days because it runs through a chain of correspondent banks. On stablecoin rails, the on-chain transfer leg settles quickly, though the full end-to-end time still includes converting on and off the rails and any checks required by the regulated framework. It is near real-time on the transfer leg, not necessarily instant end to end for every corridor.
