CASP (Crypto-Asset Service Provider)
Definition
A CASP is a firm authorised under MiCA to provide crypto-asset services such as custody, exchange and transfers, with authorisation granted by a national regulator that lists exactly which services the firm may provide.
A crypto-asset service provider, or CASP, is a firm that has been authorised under the EU Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation (MiCA) to carry out specific crypto-asset activities. These can include custody and administration of crypto-assets, exchange of crypto-assets for funds or for other crypto-assets, execution of orders, and transfer services. Authorisation is granted by a national regulator and is not blanket: it names the exact services the firm is permitted to provide. For a business evaluating a provider, checking a firm's CASP status and its permitted services is a basic step in due diligence.
