Asset-referenced token (ART)
Definition
An asset-referenced token is a type of stablecoin defined under MiCA that references a basket of assets, several currencies, or other references, rather than a single official currency.
An asset-referenced token, or ART, is the second stablecoin category defined under MiCA. Unlike an e-money token, which tracks a single official currency, an ART references something broader: a basket of currencies, one or more commodities, or a mix of assets. Because the reference is broader, ARTs follow different rules on reserves and governance, and they are less commonly used for straightforward payments. The distinction matters because the category determines the redemption right and the stability model behind the token.
